From Seeking Shelter to Shaping Place

At first, humans could use shelter already provided by nature.

Caves are the clearest example. But using a cave is different from consciously shaping a dwelling.

When humans chose a location, arranged sleeping places, made a hearth, enclosed certain areas, stored food, or built their own protective structures, they began doing something that would later become central to architecture:

altering the environment to make it better suited to life.

These changes may have been very simple, but they already involved decisions about location, materials, safety, comfort, and the use of space.

The First Materials Came from the Surroundings

Prehistoric humans did not have a building-materials industry.

What could be used depended greatly on what was available.

Timber and branches could form a frame. Grass, leaves, hides, or other organic materials could provide covering. Earth could form floors and walls. Stone could be used for foundations, boundaries, or structure.

From these conditions emerged a very direct relationship between architecture and place.

Buildings did not select materials from a global catalogue. The environment provided materials, and humans learnt to understand their properties.

Materials that were readily available, workable, and able to withstand local conditions would be used again. This knowledge could then be passed on to later generations.

Construction thus became one form of human knowledge.

Fire Changed the Way Humans Used Space

The mastery of fire brought profound changes to human life.

Fire provided warmth, light, protection, and the ability to cook food. Its presence also created a centre of activity.

People could gather around it.

Here we can see one of the oldest spatial principles: the centre.

When activities gather around something, people's positions begin to relate to that centre. Space is no longer entirely random.

As settled life developed, the idea of a centre continued to appear in many forms—hearths, courtyards, communal spaces, plazas, and eventually city centres.

Its form changed, but the human need to organise life through space remained.

When Humans Began to Settle

A major change occurred when some human groups began to live more permanently in one place and developed agriculture.

Dwellings were no longer always temporary.

People needed places to store produce, keep animals, work, sleep, gather, and protect the resources they possessed.

When several dwellings stood close together, new relationships emerged.

There were houses and spaces between houses.

There were routes of movement.

There were shared territories and more private territories.

There were boundaries.

There were places for storage and communal activity.

In other words, as humans built settled lives, they did not merely begin to develop more permanent buildings.

They began to organise shared space.

The Home Became More than Shelter

As human life became more complex, dwellings acquired broader functions.

The home became a place for family life, storage, production, social interaction, and various everyday activities.

The form of the dwelling could then reflect the way a society lived.

Were activities carried out together or separately?

Where was food stored?

Where did people sleep?

What was the relationship between inside and outside?

How did one building relate to another?

Questions that are part of design today actually have very ancient roots.

Technology changes, but many of the fundamental issues remain recognisable.

Building for Something Greater

Prehistoric humans did not build only for everyday needs.

In many places, structures and monuments have been found that indicate communal activities, ritual, burial, or meanings extending beyond the simple need for shelter.

Sites such as Göbekli Tepe in modern-day Türkiye show that humans at a very early period were capable of organising labour and materials to create monumental structures. Thousands of years later, Stonehenge in England demonstrated the ability of prehistoric communities to move and arrange stones in complex compositions.

Interpretations of the precise functions of prehistoric sites must be made cautiously because we have no direct explanations from their builders.

Yet their existence makes one thing clear:

humans built for more than survival.

Space was also used for communal life, memory, ritual, identity, and things a society considered important.

Knowledge Existed Before Theory

Early builders may not have written theories of structure or material science.

But they could learn through experience.

If one roof form failed in the rain, another was tried.

If a material deteriorated quickly, people sought an alternative.

If a particular building was more comfortable, knowledge of how to make it could be passed on.

A long process of trial, failure, observation, and transmission produced knowledge that was not always written down.

This is what may be called empirical knowledge.

Many vernacular building traditions later developed in similar ways. Techniques were passed down through practice from generation to generation and continually adapted to local conditions.

Architecture, therefore, did not first emerge from books.

It emerged from the long relationship between humans, needs, materials, and nature.

Nature Was the First Teacher

Before computer simulations and modern building science existed, humans confronted the environment directly.

The sun indicated direction.

Rain tested roofs.

Wind tested shelter.

The ground determined where habitation was possible.

The seasons changed people's needs.

The availability of materials determined what could be built.

Humans learnt through real consequences.

Buildings unsuited to their environment created problems. Successful buildings could be used again as a foundation for knowledge.

For this reason, early architecture had an exceptionally close relationship with natural conditions.

Not because people in the past always lived in harmony with nature, but because their ability to ignore nature was far more limited.

Before Architects, There Were People Who Built

The architectural profession emerged long after humans began creating dwellings and shared spaces.

This reminds us that the roots of architecture are older than the profession itself.

At the beginning of the human journey, there was no modern separation between architects, engineers, contractors, and various consultants.

There was need.

There was an environment.

There were materials.

There were people trying to make life more possible in a particular place.

From those simple acts gradually developed construction techniques, settlements, monuments, cities, theories, professions, and eventually the architectural world we know today.

The First Traces of a Long Journey

We cannot fully understand prehistoric architecture. Most buildings made from organic materials disappeared long ago, while the surviving evidence provides only small fragments of an immensely long span of human life.

For that reason, this period should not be regarded as a single, uniform architectural style.

It encompasses an enormous span of time, different societies, different environments, and continually changing ways of life.

Yet in its traces we can find the roots of several architectural concerns that remain with us today:

shelter, place, materials, climate, structure, centre, boundaries, community, privacy, memory, and meaning.

Thousands of years later, we build with concrete, steel, glass, machines, digital devices, and artificial intelligence.

Yet the earliest question has not entirely changed:

Where will humans live, and how should that place be shaped?

From that simple question, architecture's long journey began.
